El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen memorial, funeral services set for this week

Memorial and funeral services for longtime El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen will take place this week, including a public tribute at the Downtown convention center.

Chief Allen died on Tuesday at a hospital of an undisclosed condition. He was 71. Allen was with the El Paso Police Department since 1978, rising in the ranks to become the city's first Black police chief nearly 15 years ago.

Allen will be lying in state allowing the public to pay their respects at Thursday's community tribute at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center in Downtown. The memorial will allow residents to offer hand-written or electronic condolences to Chief Allen’s family.

The tribute will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with a remembrance ceremony with guest speakers from 6-7 p.m., the city of El Paso said in an announcement. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Free parking will be available at the convention center and Union Plaza Parking Garage.

Funeral for El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen

A funeral with full police honors will take place on Friday starting with funeral services at 11 a.m. at Abundant Living Faith Center, 1000 Valley Crest Drive, the city announcement said. Doors will open at 10 a.m.

A procession and interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery East, 12400 Montana Ave. At the cemetery, traditional police honors will be presented, including a three-volley salute, a last radio call and a presentation of the flag to the chief's family.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has authorized flags fly at half-staff in El Paso County in honor of Allen. Flags will be lowered to half-staff until sunset on the day of Allen's internment, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser and County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said.

Residents, businesses and government offices are encouraged to fly their flags at half-staff as a sign of honor and respect, officials said.
