El Niño Forces ‘Ice Road Trucker’ to Ghost Ride His Whip

On Thursday’s Ice Road Truckers, Alex Debogorski lamented the exceptionally short trucking season, caused by the double whammy of climate change and El Niño. He explained, “This ice road trucking season looks like a disaster … I see climate changing. The temperature is too warm.”

He was forced to tow a load over a 2-mile ice path that was so melted that only a small portion of it was open to crossing. With his 20-ton rig crossing a questionable sheet of ice, Debogorski proceeded with caution. He instructed the camera crew accompanying him to keep their door open, in case the truck fell through the ice. Debogorski stepped outside the cab of his truck and onto the running boards. In hip-hop, stepping outside of your vehicle while it’s moving is known as ghost riding the whip. Debogorski said, “This is a good place to stand if you think there might be any problems. It’s an easy way, quick way, to leave the scene, the scene of the accident.”

Luckily he and his truck made it across to ghost ride a whip another day.

Ice Road Truckers airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on the History Channel.
