An eHarmony commercial that debuted in the fall of last year is getting renewed attention after an eagle-eyed viewer pointed out to Metal Sucks that one of the actors was wearing an Iced Earth T-shirt. An odd choice, considering Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer is currently awaiting sentencing for his role in storming the US Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

It’s likely that the wardrobe stylist had no idea about the shirt’s relation to the Capitol attack, but it is an unfortunate connection considering all the other metal tees that could have been selected for the ad.

Schaffer was captured on video wearing an Oath Keepers hat as part of the mob that rushed the Capitol, and in April 2021 he pleaded guilty to obstructing an official proceeding of Congress and trespassing on restricted grounds of the Capitol while armed with a dangerous weapon.

The guitarist is currently set to be sentenced in February 2024, with prosecutors recommending a prison term of 3.5 to 4.5 years if he cooperates with law enforcement in the case.

The eHarmony commercial — part of the online dating service’s “Get Who Gets You” campaign — shows a couple in a bathroom going through their daily routines. At one point, the woman puts on the man’s metal shirt — the Iced Earth tee in question — and sniffs it, humorously making a disturbed face at the odor.
