Eddie Redmayne to reprise award-winning ‘Cabaret’ role on Broadway next spring

NEW YORK — Another Tony Award may be in Eddie Redmayne‘s near future.

The Academy Award winner is headed to Broadway for a revival of “Cabaret” next spring.

Producers announced Monday that the “Fantastic Beasts” star will reprise his Olivier Award-winning role as the Emcee in the stage musical, set to begin performances at the August Wilson Theatre on April 1. Tickets will go on sale to the general public starting Nov. 2.

Newcomer Gayle Rankin will star as nightclub performer Sally Bowles in the Rebecca Frecknall-helmed production, which is transferring from a record-setting West End run.

“It was whilst playing the Emcee in a student production of ‘Cabaret’ over 25 years ago that my love for theater was properly ignited,” Redmayne said in a statement. “It now feels completely thrilling and a little surreal to be a part of Rebecca’s truly unique vision of Masteroff, Kander, and Ebb’s brilliance as it arrives on Broadway, where the piece has such a history.”

Featuring lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masteroff, “Cabaret” tells the heartbreaking love story of American author Cliff Bradshaw and nightclub performer Sally Bowles during the Nazi takeover of Germany.

Based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play “I Am a Camera ” — adapted from a Christopher Isherwood novel — the original 1966 theatrical adaptation starred Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli in Tony Award winning turns.

The film adaptation, directed by Bob Fosse, won a record-setting eight Oscar Awards.

Redmayne, whose film credits also include “The Theory of Everything,” “The Trial of the Chicago Seven,” and “The Danish Girl,” garnered his first Tony Award for his Olivier Award-winning turn in 2010’s “Red” on Broadway.
