UPDATED Sunday with Ed Sheeran’s Reaction: In the battle between British pop stars Ed Sheeran and Sam Ryder — both nominated for Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso — it was Grammy winner Sheeran who walked away with the Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics.

This was the first Emmy nomination and first win for the “Perfect” and “Shape of You” singer-songwriter, who was not present at the Creative Emmy Awards Saturday to accept the statuette. He shared the award for “A Beautiful Game” with his co-writing team, prolific hitmaker Max Martin and Foy Vance.

The trio’s Emmy-winning song, performed by Sheeran, was featured in the Ted Lasso finale “So Long, Farewell.”

Hours after the ceremony, Sheeran took to Instagram to celebrate.

“I was not expecting to win at all, it was a real real surprise waking up to the news, I wish I had been there but I’m just about to kick off the Asia tour so had to be elsewhere sadly,” he wrote next to video from the recording of “A Beautiful Game.”

He spoke about how he, Martin and Vance were approached by the team from Ted Lasso and how “A Beautiful Game” came together.

“We were all fans of the show and got asked to do a song for the finale, so 2 years ago this month we got in together and wrote a song about love and football, and how it is always about the journey rather than the destination. I recorded a crowd at one of my stadium shows for it singing the final chant to keep it in the footie wibes,” Sheeran said. ” It was up against some fantastic artists and songs in its Emmy category for Best Original Music and Lyrics, hence not thinking we had a chance in hell of winning, but thank you so much for whoever voted for it, and to Max, Foy and all the Lasso crew. I really am honoured.”

The other nominated song from Season 3 of Ted Lasso was the Queen-channeling “Fought & Lost”, co-written and performed by Ryder, featuring the band’s Brian May. The category also included original songs from Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia, Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q, Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as Roku’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

While Yankovic didn’t take home the Music and Lyrics trophy for “Now You Know”, it was a good night for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which won for Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score) and for Outstanding Television Movie.

Ted Lasso also ended the night with two Emmys as Sam Richardson won for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
