Easter events in Belmar, Asbury Park, and more things to do this weekend at the Shore

Belmar Arts Center is hosting a workshop at 10 a.m. Friday on Pysanky — colorful, intricately decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs, a folk tradition that is both art and prayer.

"This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process, and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a springtime family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come," according to event information on the BAC website.

The 2½-workshop will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky; a demonstration; and an independent practice session. Instructor Jenny Santa Maria will provide a variety of eggs, traditional and untraditional colored dyes, and tools.

Participants will turn real eggs into art using a wax resist method similar to batik.

"A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax layers are taken off," the site says.

Note that in-person attendance is limited. A workshop at BAC earlier this month sold out. Attendees are asked to bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. Tickets are $40, plus a $10 material fee paid to the instructor.

Santa Maria considers her work "batik eggs" because they have a more modern aesthetic and stretch the boundaries of the traditional process, the site mentions.

On her biography on the BAC site, Santa Maria says "There is no greater joy than keeping this soulful process alive and bringing families together through the arts."

Go: Pysanky, 10 a.m. Friday, Belmar Arts Center, 608 River Road, $40, plus $10 materials fee; 732-749-3360, belmararts.org.

Anthony Rodia at the Basie

Comic Anthony Rodia has two shows at the Basie on Saturday.

A first-generation Italian-American born and raised in Westchester, New York, comedian Anthony Rodia brings his Totally Relatable Tour to the Count Basie Center for the Arts on Saturday.

While he tried a few open mics in his 20s, Rodia ended up as a finance manager of a luxury car dealership. In 2019, he returned to comedy full-time.

During the pandemic, he delivered 86 weekly videos. “ROAD RAGE WEDNESDAY” became a fan favorite, but his Uncle Vinny and Zia Lucia characters took him to another level. Press information says they are the crazy uncle and aunt you love but can’t be out in public with, who speak their minds (whether you asked for it or not).

He now has more than 900,000 social media followers, and his YouTube videos have amassed 22 million views. Rodia's comedy pulls from his real life and his observations on marriage, parenthood, road rage — and everything else worthy of a social media rant. He also hosts the weekly podcast, Little Bit of Laughs, on Podcast One.

Rodia plays at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $39 to $69.
