EastEnders tonight: Will Lola wed Jay amid second thoughts?

Another soap wedding is in jeopardy in tonight’s EastEnders, which airs on BBC One at 7.30pm, and all eyes are on bride Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold).

Terminally ill Lola is battling a brain tumour, and groom Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) has been by her side through it all as the couple vowed to enjoy every moment they had left together.

The week began with Lola feeling fragile ahead of her hen party. Jay saved the day, enlisting Lola’s maid of honour Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) to pamper her and raise her spirits.

Meanwhile, Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) tracked down Lola’s long-lost mother, Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit). Emma was shocked to learn that Lola’s father, Dan, was dead; and she revealed that she often thought of her daughter.

But when Billy invited her to the wedding, Emma refused, saying that Lola was better off without her. Meanwhile, Jay was furious that Billy had gone behind Lola’s back.

Lola remained oblivious to her family’s interference as Kim talked her through her jitters in heartwarming scenes. But when Lola began to feel unwell, Kim took her to the hospital on the way to the ceremony.

She was informed that her condition hadn’t worsened; but as her fears spiralled she questioned why Jay would want to marry someone who is dying, and told Kim she needed to call off the wedding. As Jay waits at the venue with no idea how his wife-to-be is feeling, will Lola break Jay’s heart?

Talking us through Lola’s state of mind on her big day, star Harold explains: “Once Lola is [in the hospital] in the moment, she has a realisation when everyone turns and stares at her dressed in her wedding dress in the A&E waiting room, and that’s when all of those emotions start to bubble to the surface.”

You’ll just have to tune in to find out Lola’s final decision, but prepare for emotional scenes, with stunning performances from Harold and Borthwick. In the meantime, the actor adds that she was happy with her character’s fashion statement for the occasion.

“So much work went on behind the scenes to make sure every detail was right, and it was great that I was able to work with the wardrobe department to incorporate some of those signature Lola-isms in the day. She has glitzy wedding trainers with ribbons, and of course, her hoops!”

EastEnders airs at 7:30pm on BBC One.
