“Don’t overthink this sh*t,” encouraged Earthgang artist Johnny Venus to his rap partner Doctur Dot and fellow Dreamville labelmates Lute and Cozz as they prepared to take on Red Bull’s Spiral Freestyle challenge.

All four artists stood and sat in a small huddle, laser-focused in the beverage brand’s Santa Monica studio, getting acclimated with the beat and channeling their creative energy to rapid rhymes.

While the entire collective and members of the production team enjoyed sidebar conversations and laughter, creating a laid-back environment, the rappers were ready when the camera turned on and the beat dropped.

The undeniable chemistry that flowed through their performance was fostered through brotherhood through music and artistry.

“I think the first time we met them fools was on the road somewhere performing,” reflected Johnny Venus to VIBE after the taping. “The first time we met Cozz was on tour, so we’ve had that chemistry for a minute where we’re rooting each other on, performing with each other, and just giving each other pointers.”

“I think our whole environment we always recorded in was kind of like [a] ‘the homies’ environment anyway. So, it was really effortless,” added Doctur Dot.

Both Cozz and Lute added their thoughts on the camaraderie between all of the musicians and how it enabled the success of their cypher.

“I just think we’re so used to it,” detailed the West Coast representative. “We used to each other, as you said, the chemistry there. We’ve known each other for a long time now. We’re all competitive and we’re all perfectionists, so it just feels like another… We haven’t linked in a minute, but every time we do it don’t feel like we haven’t seen each other in a while. As an artist, it helps me grow because I’m naturally competitive and to be around people that I know are nice with it helps me not to slack off.”

Lute added, “It’s just so organic. That’s why I appreciate Dreamville because it’s like a big family. We all come from different backgrounds, but the energy is a big family vibe.”
