‘Eagle Huntress,’ ‘O.J.: Made in America’ Among Producers Guild Documentary Film Nominees
The Producers Guild of America has selected “Dancer,” “The Eagle Huntress,” “Life, Animated,” “O.J.: Made in America” and “Tower” as nominees for its top feature film documentary award.
The winner will be announced on Jan. 29 at the 28th annual PGA awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“The Eagle Huntress,” directed by Otto Bell, is the story of a 13-year-old Mongolian girl named Aisholpan attempting to be the first female eagle hunter in her country. It’s narrated by executive producer Daisy Ridley.
Sony Pictures Classics bought “The Eagle Huntress” after its Sundance premiere and released the film on Nov. 2. It’s grossed $542,113 at 39 North American sites.
“O.J.: Made in America” has also been nominated for the top feature award by the International Documentary Association. It’s produced and directed by Ezra Edelman for ESPN Films and its “30 for 30” series. “Made in America” premiered at Sundance and was released in theaters in May before airing on ABC and ESPN.
“Dancer” is a film about Ukrainian ballet dancer Sergei Polunin. It’s produced by Gabrielle Tana for BBC Films and directed by Steven Cantor.
“Life, Animated” is produced by Julie Goodman and Roger Ross Williams for A&E IndieFilms. Williams won the directing award in the U.S. Documentary category at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for his story about coming-of-age story about Owen Suskind, who ceased speaking at 3 years old and found in Disney animation a pathway to language and a framework for making sense of the world.
“Tower,” directed by Keith Maitland, is an animated film that recaps the 1966 shootings at the University of Texas at Austin, in which 16 people were killed. “Tower” won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Award at in March at the SXSW Festival.
In 2016, the Amy Winehouse documentary “Amy” won the PGA award for James Gay-Rees, and went on to win the Academy Award.
A total of 145 documentary feature films were submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 89th Academy Awards. Members of the Academy’s documentary branch will select 15 films as a shortlist in December and the five nominations will be announced on Jan. 24. The Oscar ceremony is set for Feb. 26.
PGA nominations will be announced Jan. 5 for the Television Series/Specials and Children’s Programs, Long Form Television and Sports and Digital Series. Nominations for Theatrical Motion Pictures and Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures will be announced Jan. 10.
