“This song means a lot to me,” he explained to VIBE during a Zoom interview. “I started writing this song in 2018, right after filming the first season of Pose. And I had a moment of clarity where I recognized, ‘Wow, I’m living my dream. Six years before, when I moved to New York and had been fired from my job at the church that I was working at as worship leader and creative director of the Worship Arts Ministry. After telling my pastor that I was attracted to men, and him telling me that I better get a handle of that thing before it ruins my life.”

He continued, “To now find myself having just finished filming the first season of Pose on what was arguably one of the most important television series of the last decade in terms of shifting the culture, shifting the narratives about Black and Brown people, about trans women, about LGBTQ people, to find myself right in the middle of that. And to take those words that he said and compare them with where I was and how I was sort of being elevated by owning my authenticity and my truth, it made me emotional and it also inspired me.

“It made me realize, ‘Wow, I’m powerful. I’ve manifested this life for myself by living in my truth, and by being authentic, not by doing it in some way that somebody else told me that I had to do it.” And so I realized that the thing that he and other people may have called a weakness was my greatest strength, was my superpower, and that’s why I wanted to write the song….I didn’t want the song to feel like medicine. I wanted the song to actually feel good. I wanted it to feel like a song that would amp me up in the gym in the moment when I needed that extra push.”

“I wanted it to feel good. I wanted it to feel the way that I felt in my life at the time. It was like, ‘Oh, I’m on top of the world,'” he added. “‘All of my dreams are coming true. There’s nothing I can’t do. I’m unstoppable. I’m unshakeable.’ I woke up feeling like I’m on top of the world. I woke up feeling invincible. Everything that I touch is gold, no one telling me nothing. That’s how I wanted the music to feel, too. I wanted it to feel like triumph and to feel like Rocky is climbing up the steps, getting ready to defeat Apollo.”

With this mindset, the actor continues to be inspired by others and hopes to take all aspects of his career and create an impact across the board.

“Expansive, prolific, and meaningful,” Burnside answers when asked what he hopes his career stands for in the future.
