Dylan McDermott Feels 'Haunted' by Rubber Man, but It's Only Anthony Anderson, in “American Horror Story” Emmys Moment

McDermott kicked off the 'AHS' franchise in 2011 as one of the original stars of season 1's 'Murder House'

Dylan McDermott had a hilariously scary moment at the 2023 Emmy Awards!

The American Horror Story actor appeared onstage at Los Angeles's Peacock Theater — which was styled to look like the murder house from season 1 — during the awards ceremony Monday night. It was all part of the 75th Annual Emmy Awards' ongoing nod to past TV shows that viewers still hold beloved.

McDermott — who was there to announce the award for best lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie — paid tribute to the FX anthology series' creators. "We would not have American Horror Story, a winner of 16 Emmys, without the series creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk," he said, before acknowledging the mist and eerie aura of the stage.

"Is it me, or does this place seem...haunted? It's almost like somebody's watching me," McDermott said — only to realize there was someone watching him: a 2024 version of the iconic series villian, Rubber Man.

"Oh no, not this dude, again," he said once he clocked the character.

However, it turned out to just be host Anthony Anderson, who revealed himself once he unzipped the top of his full-body, black lycra suit. "It’s hard to breathe in these kind of things. I don’t know how that dude did it in Pulp Fiction," Anderson quipped. "Wait, am I sweating back there? You know Dylan, I thought my butt was bigger till I put on this thing.

Later on, Anderson — still wearing the suit, as well as a black, plush robe — returned to the stage for another segment. "Turns out it's kind of hard to peel yourself out of a latex rubber suit quickly," he joked. "I'm real moist up in here right now. I've gotta take a shower."

McDermott kicked off the American Horror Story franchise with the “Murder House” season back in 2011. Since then, the horror anthology has become a fan-favorite TV series, spawning 11 more shocking installments, including season 12's "Delicate," and the spinoff, American Horror Stories.

On season 1 of AHS, McDermott portrayed Dr. Ben Harmon alongside wife Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton), a married couple who moved from Boston into a massive Los Angeles fixer-up inhabited by souls of its past tenants.

Things got even spookier when their daughter, Violet (Taissa Farmiga), befriended and fell for resident ghoul Tate Langdon (Evan Peters).

Seasons that followed included “Coven,” “Freak Show,” “Hotel,” “Roanoke” and “Cult."

Many actors on the show, such as Farmiga, McDermott, and Peters, have returned for more than one season. The rotating troupe of stars throughout the years include Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Chloë Sevigny, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Finn Wittrock and more.

As time went on, the show’s popularity helped recruit even bigger names, such as Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Lady Gaga, Cuba Gooding Jr., Macaulay Culkin and Kim Kardashian.

In its 13 years on the air, American Horror Story has earned 94 Emmy nominations, with 16 wins going to Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and many of the series' creative and crafts teams.
