Christopher Abeyta was seven months old at the time he went missing from his crib in July 1986. In all that time, says his family, they’ve never stopped looking for him.

Police in Christopher’s hometown are still working the case, now over three decades old. Lieutenant Howard Black of the Colorado Springs Police Department says they have a detective assigned to the case who continues to follow every lead, from DNA swabs to doing interviews around the country. He says they’ve followed up on about 180 leads in the case over time.

Christopher’s sister, Denise, says after her baby brother’s disappearance, her mother, Bernice, quietly investigated on her own, looking for clues as to who might have taken him. Her family says that after three decades of searching, Bernice succumbed to cancer in February 2017. Before she died, she left a message for her child.

“Christopher, I want to tell you if I’m not here you couldn’t even imagine how much your whole family has loved you and missed you,” says Bernice on the video recording.” She continues, “We were determined to get you back and that’s what we’ve worked on for all these years. I don’t think there’s anything else we could have done. Whatever your choices have been in life, I just want you to be happy.”

Denise, her father, Gil, and other members of the Abeyta family continue Bernice’s search for her missing son.
