Dwyane Wade wants to be a part of the SuperSonics' return to Seattle

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade might not be done playing yet, but he already has big plans when he retires. Wade is interested in being part-owner of a franchise. Not just any franchise, though. He wants to bring the SuperSonics back to Seattle.

Why does Dwyane Wade want to bring the SuperSonics to Seattle?

Wade told the Washington Post he believes Seattle is “a great basketball town” and wants to be a part of Seattle’s team coming back.

“I want Seattle’s team, the Sonics, to come back,” Wade said. “I think Seattle is a great basketball town. I would love to be a part of that.”

What are the chances the SuperSonics return to Seattle?

There’s been no official announcement regarding Seattle getting a team again, but things are trending in the right direction. The city is renovating Key Arena so it can support a basketball team in the future. That project is expected to be completed by 2020.

Seattle remains a popular candidate to get a team any time relocation or expansion is mentioned. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the city would be on the league’s shortlist when the time comes.

Dwyane Wade wouldn’t be the first player to join an ownership group when he’s done

Plenty of former players have joined ownership groups in the past. The Washington Post notes Shaquille O’Neal, Grant Hill and Magic Johnson all have stakes in professional sports teams. Johnson is part of the ownership group for the Los Angeles Dodgers. It wouldn’t be uncommon for Wade to drift into that area once his playing career is over.

Did Dwyane Wade retire?

Wade has not decided whether he’s going to play next season. He’s made at hints at hanging it up soon, but told reporters he needed time to think about things during the offseason. If Wade decides to give it another go, that would likely delay him getting involved with an ownership group.
