Dwyane Wade May Have Unintentionally Shaded Gabrielle Union at the Oscars & Fans Aren’t Having It

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade cut quite a stunning figure on the red carpet at the 2024 Oscars. Her stunning two-piece sparkling-silver Carolina Herrera ensemble and his Versace white tux with black trim is bound to land them on the best-dressed list. However, that’s not why they are making news on Hollywood’s biggest night.
They are there to celebrate Wade’s nomination as an executive producer on the documentary short, The Barber of Little Rock, which focuses on the racial wealth gap in the United States. The couple was interviewed by ABC’s On the Red Carpet when Wade might have hit a snag on his big night — the retired athlete may have unintentionally shaded his wife. When the reporter asked him if his Hollywood executive producer role was something he always hoped to be a part of in his post-NBA career, Wade’s answer took a left turn.

“Me and my wife always wanted to come to the Oscars, we wanted to have a reason to be here. And one of us has a project here, I’m the first one to bring us here,” Wade said with a smile while looking at Union. “I am so happy about that.” Record scratch! The reporter acknowledged his little, but playful, dig while he added, “No pressure, no pressure on my wife.”
She was a good sport about it and chimed right in, “Challenge accepted.”
Social media also had something to say, too — and they are clearly in the 51-year-old actress’ corner. “Watch it, Dwayne Wade! Gabrielle Union is a Queen talent,” wrote one account on X. Another added, “Dwayne Wade calling out the fact that he’s the reason they’re at the #Oscar’s for the first time is CRAZY.” And of course, there’s one guy who knows that Wade will probably be in a (wee) bit of trouble when he gets home. They wrote, “Not Dwayne Wade throwing shade at Gabrielle Union on being the first one of them to be nominated for an Oscar lmaooo.”
The probably accidental dig might raise a few eyebrows, though, because there were unconfirmed rumors that there might be trouble in their nine-year marriage, according to the Atlanta Black Star. The former basketball star was spotted on a solo outing at the GQ Men of the Year afterparty in Los Angeles in November. He wasn’t wearing his wedding ring and fans started to worry that there was trouble in paradise. The couple have also been open about the child Wade fathered when the duo took a brief break while they are dating — it makes some critics wary that their relationship won’t last. But Union seemed to talk the little Oscars dig in stride, and we would be surprised to see a nomination coming her way in the future. She’s up for the challenge!
