Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson returned to his roots and returned to the ring for UFC 244 as a guest host. He awarded the BMF title to Jorge Masvidal, posting about the champion's win on Instagram.
"Away from all the noise, good to have a quiet moment. I’m always impressed with an individual’s discipline and commitment to succeed. But I’m impressed more with how one handles their success and that level of intense pressure to be No.1.
Congrats @gamebredfighter for being that example, raising the bar and getting the job done.My goal was to help promote this fight as much as I could in hopes that Jorge, @natediaz209 and all the fighters could make as much money as possible at the Garden - that was completely sold out. Congrats! Thanks brotha for having the brilliant idea to have me present the BMF Title to you."
Nate Diaz Did Not Hold Back
The whole situation didn't sit well with the defeated Nate Diaz, who went on an NSFW rant about Johnson after the BMF bout. He accused Johnson of favoritism because he and Masvidal are friends.
"F--- The Rock too man, that motherf----- over here playing me. See him over there smiling with Masvidal. Should have had Mike Tyson handing out a belt if anybody.
The Rock’s cool. I like Ballers. But he picked the wrong side so he can get his ass whipped too."
The rant may have been half-joking, but it wasn't a great look from Diaz.
The Rock Isn't Sweating It
Johnson appeared on Ariel Helwani's MMA Show to address Diaz's rant, taking the whole thing in stride.
"“I wasn’t surprised at Nate’s comments because that’s the Nate that we all know and love. He is as advertised. Nate, he gets it. He knows that me and Jorge we’re boys, we’re from Miami. We have a lot of deep connections down there. A lot of the fighters we know, a lot of the coaches and trainers that we know, a lot of the gyms that we’ve been to down there. So there’s a connection, so no I was totally fine with it."
What He Said To Masvidal
He also told Helwani what he told Masvidal after his big win.
"“I congratulated him of course and I talked to him about what this opportunity meant and how this BMF title that is somewhat polarizing in the sport of MMA - some guys were behind it and some guys weren’t - but again, this is this unique experience that kind of transcends weight divisions and the sport because it has such street cred. There’s incredible champions who are incredibly disciplined and skilled in multiple disciplines of MMA, and then there’s the BMFs. So I was very happy for Jorge."
