Dwayne Johnson reveals release date, plot details for ‘Skyscraper’
Dwayne Johnson has fought wrestlers, street racers, and earthquakes. Now, he’s taking his next battle to new heights.
The artist formerly known as The Rock has revealed plot details and the release date for Skyscraper, his new action film, which will be set and filmed in China.
Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who was behind Johnson’s Central Intelligence, the film will be released by Universal and Legendary on July 13, 2018. Johnson will star as Will Ford, a U.S. war veteran and skyscraper security adviser, who is on assignment in China. When the world’s tallest building is set ablaze, Ford is framed for the crime, and he must find a way to get his family out of the burning structure.

On Instagram, Johnson shared a picture of the script alongside a fire extinguisher, and in a long caption, wrote about his inspiration for the character.
“This character is inspired by the thousands of disabled U.S. veterans and war heroes I’ve had the honor of shaking hands with over the years,” he said. “This character is also an homage to the every day man and woman who, despite all odds, will dig deep and do everything possible to protect and save their family. Research for this film has been a real education for me (and that’s saying a lot considering my horrible freshman year GPA) from meeting with the world’s top skyscraper architects to spending amazing time with our US combat and disabled vets. Good thing I’m not afraid of heights. But at 4,000ft it’s a different story. Let’s get to work.”
While Skyscraper isn’t released until next summer, Johnson will still be very visible on the big screen over the next few months, with The Fate of the Furious out April 14 and Baywatch following on May 26.
