Fans clamouring for a polarizing figure to join the Toronto Argonauts’ ranks may soon get their wish.
Renounced former Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver-slash-defensive back Duron Carter is in Toronto and will meet with the Argonauts, 3DownNation’s Justin Dunk reports, citing multiple sources.
Carter was released on Aug. 11, partway through his second season in Saskatchewan and fifth since arriving north of the border. Riders coach Chris Jones didn’t offer a concrete reason for his release.
Carter was limited to 111 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions after taking the majority of his snaps in Saskatchewan this season on the defensive side of the ball. He crossed the 1,000-yard threshold in receiving in his first season under Jones, and was named the team’s most outstanding player.
S.J. Green is the Argos’ top receiver through 10 weeks, ranking 13th in the CFL with 447 yards on 39 receptions.
Dunk notes that Carter shares an agent with Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard, which apparently might play a role in the decision. Carter hinted at being done with football soon after his release, though it appears he’s changed his tune.
