As Dune fans await the next big-screen installment in the potential trilogy, the sci-fi franchise has revealed the first trailer for Dune: Prophecy, a prequel series that will stream on Max this fall.

Taking place 10,000 years before the saga of Paul Atreides that featured in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, Dune: Prophecy “follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit,” HBO Max said in a synopsis.

(For those unfamiliar with the Dune movies, the Bene Gesserit is a sisterhood who manipulate events in the worlds created by sci-fi author Frank Herbert; in the recent Dune movies, Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Atreides’ mother, is a member of the shadowy sect.)

As the events of the series are 100 centuries in the past, Dune: Prophecy boasts an entirely new cast of characters, with Emily Watson, Mark Strong, Olivia Williams, and Travis Fimmel among its stars. Dune: Prophecy is based on the 2012 book Sisterhood of Dune, written by Frank Herbert’s son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Max has not yet announced when specifically the six-episode first season will stream, only that it will arrive in the fall. The Prophecy trailer arrives less than one week before Dune: Part II itself comes to Max on May 21.
