Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi sequel is drawing comparisons to "The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."
The first reactions to Dune: Part Two have arrived, and it sounds like director Denis Villeneuve has cultivated even more desert power than in the 2021 original.
EW's Devan Coggan wrote on social media Thursday that the film is "pretty spectacular," adding that she "will never get tired of how Villeneuve makes crazy spaceships and space worms feel real and tactile." Meanwhile, EW's Christian Holub said that the sequel "worth the wait."
Several media members praised Zendaya's performance as Chani as a standout. Holub noted that "anyone who thought there wasn't enough Zendaya in the first one has a lot to look forward to" — which should come as a relief to fans of the Euphoria actress who were disappointed by her limited screen time in the first film. Esther Zuckerman called her "the crux of [the] whole movie," while Inverse's Hoai-Tran Bui wrote that "Zendaya is the star."
Other viewers highlighted Austin Butler's turn as Feyd Rautha, a new antagonist in Part Two. Kyle Buchanan of the New York Times compared the "incredible" character to "an evil Balenciaga NoHo Hank," in reference to Anthony Carrigan's fan-favorite Barry baddie, while Gregory Ellwood of the Playlist called it a "truly transformative performance (and not talking makeup either)." Mike Ryan of Uproxx said that Butler's performance "is literally channeling a demon from hell.”
Dune: Part Two will pick up where Part One left off, with Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides navigating the deserts of Arrakis alongside his mother, Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and the Fremen, including Chani (Zendaya) and Stilgar (Javier Bardem). Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, and Dave Bautista will also reprise their roles from the first movie, while Florence Pugh, Lea Seydoux, and Christopher Walken are among the newcomers.
Some journalists compared Villeneuve's directorial vision to Peter Jackson, George Lucas, and David Lean. Bui said the movie has "[Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers]-level mastery of battle sequences," while Brandon Davis wrote, "Some of the visuals in Dune: Part Two had me so astonished, I feel like I understand how everyone felt seeing Star Wars for the first time back in 1977." David Gonzalez called the film "Villeneuve's Empire Strikes Back & Lawrence of Arabia. A sci-fi opera that is not just grand in scale, but in its hypnotizing and emotionally devastating story." Jake Hamilton said, "When Lord of the Rings ended in '03, I was worried we'd never have a movie experience like that ever again. I was wrong. Now we have Dune."

Dune 2 is pretty spectacular. I will never get tired of how Villeneuve makes crazy spaceships and space worms feel real and tactile. Can't wait to see it again on an absolutely ginormous screen.

Dune: Part Two is worth the wait. In particular, anyone who thought there wasn’t enough Zendaya in the first one has a lot to look forward to. More to come on this 👀

Ahhh we're allowed to talk about Dune: Part Two. Austin Butler has decided to just make his accent "Stellan Skarsgard" and it's great. Also Zendaya is the crux of his whole movie.

DUNE: PART TWO is a triumph. Even more immense than the first, but much more intimate — Denis Villeneuve manages to streamline the more alienating second half of the book into a riveting, action-packed epic. TWO TOWERS-level mastery of battle sequences. Zendaya is the star. pic.twitter.com/gUYD6g3onN

Austin Butler slinking into all his DUNE 2 scenes like an evil Balenciaga NoHo Hank… incredible

DUNE: Part Two is a masterpiece. Maybe one of the best space films ever. Besides being the most visually impressive movie I've seen—an assault on all the senses—it's an riveting political thriller & character study. The cast is great but Rebecca Ferguson & Austin Butler steal it. pic.twitter.com/q7AZugQeGK

Dune: Part Two is damn impressive. Villeneuve crafts some truly VISIONARY moments. Austin Butler gives a truly transformative performance (and not talking makeup either). Very moving ending. A wee bit long? Yes. Did I forget I saw it the next day? Yes. Still, gonna be massive. pic.twitter.com/ARooLrTK8z

I was kind of mixed on the first Dune. DUNE: PART TWO is phenomenal. Up there with the greatest sci-fi movies I’ve ever seen. I want to ride a sandworm. #DunePartTwo

Also Austin Butler as Feyd in this movie is demonic. He is literally channeling a demon from hell.

This is what I texted the foremost DUNE-head in my life—my dad— yesterday after watching DUNE PART TWO. I’m in a full froth for this thing, it’s even better than the first and I loved that one! pic.twitter.com/kMfZBhLjUw

DUNE: PART TWO. Denis Villeneuve knew the assignment was "make THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" and he nailed it. It's a terrific movie, can't wait to see it again.

Dune: Part Two is a masterpiece.
Denis Villeneuve drops an awe-inspiring, action-packed achievement in a hearty, complex story. It’s an astonishing, moving film which demands to be seen on the biggest, most immersive screen possible. I loved it. Innovative and thrilling. pic.twitter.com/r8s6IFCdWW— BD (@BrandonDavisBD) February 15, 2024
Some of the visuals in Dune: Part Two had me so astonished, I feel like I understand how everyone felt seeing Star Wars for the first time back in 1977. It’s just unbelievable at times.

Dune: Part Two — Denis Villeneuve lands every spectacular, brutalist tableau he threw in the air three years ago. Sci-fi mythmaking at its finest and most tragic: the gravity of manufactured destiny, the untamable tendrils or belief. Loved this. pic.twitter.com/bWO9cUirhc

#DunePartTwo is an audio/visual triumph on par with (relatively speaking) 'John Wick 4' or 'Avatar 2'. Strong performances, some clever action beats but, like DUNE 1, it's a 2.5-hour film that mostly runs out of story at the 90-minute mark and jogs in place til the climax. pic.twitter.com/lNBjHDL0l1

Dune Part II: well at least Javier Bardem was having fun.

Dune: Part Two is Denis Villeneuve's Empire Strikes Back & Lawrence of Arabia. A sci-fi opera that is not just grand in scale, but in its hypnotizing and emotionally devastating story. Austin Butler will be a talking point for many, but its Timothée Chalamet who left my jaw on… pic.twitter.com/IOyfauU5xQ

When LORD OF THE RINGS ended in ‘03, I was worried we’d never have a movie experience like that ever again.
I was wrong. Now we have DUNE.
PART TWO isn’t just bigger and better than PART ONE in every way — it cements the series as one of the greatest cinematic experiences EVER. pic.twitter.com/0enjqsGTCj— Jake Hamilton (@JakesTakes) February 15, 2024
Dune: Part Two is truly an awe-inspiring cinematic achievement; one that continues to advance and build upon the world that Denis Villeneuve and company have exquisitely created, crafted and shaped.
If you loved part one, you are going to go absolutely wild for part two. While… pic.twitter.com/BkOU1Fv7w0— Scott Menzel (@ScottDMenzel) February 15, 2024
