The journey back to the desert planet of Arrakis may take longer than expected.
“Dune: Part Two,” the second chapter in the Warner Bros. and Legendary sci-fi epic, has been postponed and will now open in theaters on Nov. 17, 2023, instead of Oct. 20, 2023.
More from Variety
On its new release date, the “Dune” sequel is scheduled to open in theaters alongside Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games” prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and Universal’s “Trolls 3.”
Warner Bros. and Legendary, co-producers on “Dune” and other blockbuster franchises, also announced that an untitled “Godzilla vs. Kong” film will be released on March 15, 2024.
Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem are returning for “Dune: Part Two,” with Florence Pugh, Austin Butler and Christopher Walken set to join the cast. Director Denis Villeneuve is expected to start filming the “Dune” sequel, which follows the second half of Frank Herbert’s seminal novel, later this year.
The first “Dune” generated $400 million worldwide, one of the few successes of Warner Bros.’ experimental hybrid release strategy in which its 2021 slate dropped simultaneously on HBO Max. A critical triumph in addition to its commercial glory, “Dune” was nominated for 10 Oscars and won for sound, visual effects and four others.
“Godzilla vs. Kong” filmmaker Adam Wingard is back to direct the next monster mash-up between Godzilla and King Kong after steering the latest other-worldly blockbuster to COVID-era glory. While debuting day-and-date on HBO Max, his film “Godzilla vs Kong” collected $474 million at the global box office at a time when many movie theaters were still shuttered due to the pandemic.
There are no details available for Godzilla and King Kong’s upcoming brouhaha. It will mark the fifth installment in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s monster universe following 2014’s “Godzilla,” 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island,” 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
