Are Dunder Mifflin's employees headed back to The Office ?

Rumors of a revival of The Office have circulated since the show concluded on NBC in 2013 — and now, the original series' showrunner Greg Daniels has offered a comment.

In an interview with Collider, Daniels couldn't definitively confirm (or deny!) the recent reports that we'd be returning to Scranton — though details are paper-thin. "Well, I think that it's very speculative," Daniels said. "The fact that it kind of blew up based on one line in a puck piece was kind of cool, I guess, in the sense that the fans still care a lot."

Daniels was referring to a recent report by Matt Belloni of Puck News, which stated that the former showrunner would ink a deal to revive The Office once the WGA strike officially ended. However, no such news broke when the strike concluded earlier this month.

Daniels' next comment did suggest that a revival may be in the works, but that it's far too early to discuss any further. "The thing I would say is, when there's something to announce, I will definitely announce it," he told the outlet.

Representatives from NBCUniversal did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

In 2019, Daniels spoke to EW about the possibility of a revival. "It was such a perfect thing that I would hesitate to open it up," Daniels said of the original show. "We got the chance to end it the way we wanted to end it. It wasn't like we were interrupted in the middle of a run or something. So in a sense it's completely an artistic whole. But, that said, I don't know, the cast every now and then talks about getting back together in some form, but I don't see it being a reboot like the way Will & Grace was rebooted."

The Office ran for nine seasons on NBC between 2005 and 2013, gathering a devoted fan base and winning five Emmys during its run. Since the show's conclusion, some of its stars have gone on to massive Hollywood success — John Krasinski has become an in-demand director with the Quiet Place films, and Mindy Kaling has created several beloved comedy series, including The Mindy Project and Never Have I Ever.

Other former cast members have maintained their ties to the show's legacy — Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey have hosted the Office Ladies recap podcast for four years, while Leslie David Baker attempted to crowdfund a spinoff based on his character Stanley. While we don't know which Dunder Mifflin employees will want to return to The Office with a potential revival, it's safe to assume that some combination of the show's former cast would happily renew their contracts.
