A new social gathering spot with a selection of activities including duckpin bowling and dart walls and a wide selection of tap beer will open in Corktown. The new spot, Corktown Taphouse, is the latest announcement for the Perennial Corktown site on Michigan Avenue.

Corktown Taphouse, touted as a family-friendly pub, plans to offer a variety of drink selections, including 70 self-service taps for beer, wine, and seltzers, along with food options.

The place will also be a spot for duckpin bowling, a game that uses smaller pins and a lighter-weight ball to knock the pins down.

Construction is underway and a late summer opening is expected, according to a news release from Hunter Pasteur, the Forbes Co. and Oxford Capital Group, developers of the Perennial Corktown apartments in Detroit.

“We’re excited to introduce Corktown Taphouse to the residents and neighbors of Corktown,” said Randy Wertheimer, CEO of Hunter Pasteur in a news release. “Corktown Taphouse brings something unique to Perennial Corktown and the neighborhood. This adds so much to our residents' living experience and gives the neighborhood a new space to relax and enjoy with friends and family.”

Corktown Taphouse is a venture from Ron Moore and his wife, Michele, of North Carolina. It was their son, Mitchell, the director of operations, who lives in Michigan that led the couple to the Corktown area.

Moore said that upon retiring, he thought about starting a business, touring the Corktown area and researching its growth.

“My wife, son, and I wanted to create something that can be a focal point in the community,” said Ron Moore, founder and developer of Corktown Taphouse, in a news release. “We want to be a part of Corktown and to make the space welcoming and fun for everyone in the neighborhood.”

The expected investment in the nearly 8,000-square-foot taproom, with a nearly 175-person seating capacity, is $2.4 million.

Perennial Corktown, a new upscale apartment development, opened in January at 1611 Michigan Ave. Across from the former Tiger Stadium, the seven-story Perennial Corktown features a 188-unit apartment building with a mix of studios, two bedrooms, and townhouses.

Other retail options planned for the ground floor include Haraz Coffee, a fast-growing local coffee chain with locations in metro Detroit and several states.

Also expected to open soon is Corktown Market, a bodega-style grocery and convenience store offering groceries, prepared foods, and other items.
