Duchess Meghan celebrates International Day of the Girl with throwback clip

Duchess Meghan is celebrating International Day of the Girl Child with a special throwback.

The royal, formerly known as "Suits" star Meghan Markle, was honored on the official Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Instagram Friday in a video celebrating the United Nations' initiative.

In addition to including clips of girls from around the world, the video also shows a familiar face: the duchess, herself, when she was 11.

According to the duchess' bio on the royal family's website, Duchess Meghan made waves long before she tied the knot to Prince Harry in 2018. Back when she was a kid, the royal, campaigned for a dish soap company to change their advertising.

The now-38-year-old was inspired to act as a kid, after seeing a commercial for the soap that "used sexist language," her bio says. Soon after, the company changed their commercial.

"If you see something that you don't like or are offended by on television or any other place, write letters and send them to the right people, and you can really make a difference for not just yourself but lots of other people," young Duchess Meghan said in the Instagram clip.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Instagram post also described the work she does for women and girls around the world today.

"The Duchess of Sussex has been a long time advocate for women’s and girls rights and at the age of eleven campaigned against a sexist advertisement, which was then changed," the caption read. "No matter what age, or what background you have the power to make an impact."

According to the United Nations' website, International Day of the Girl Child began in 2012 "to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights."
