By now, fans of Dua Lipa know that her new album is psychedelia-inspired with contributions from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the pop star dug deeper into the influences of her upcoming third studio LP, including the UK acts Primal Scream and Massive Attack.

In the profile, RS staff writer Brittany Spanos reports that Lipa described the album as a “psychedelic-pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture” drawing heavy inspiration from Primal Scream and Massive Attack. Lipa named Primal Scream’s 1991 breakout album, Screamadelica, as a particular influence.

Other inspirations for the album include Britpop legends like Oasis and Blur, as well as ’90s rock and electronic acts like Moby and Gorillaz.

“This record feels a bit more raw,” Lipa explained in the interview. “I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad. You can’t change it. You just have to roll with the punches of whatever’s happening in your life.”

Lipa also spoke about first meeting Parker in July 2022. “I was so nervous because I’m just such a fan of Kevin’s,” she said, adding that Parker was “quite shy in the beginning.”

The initial introduction led to Lipa bringing him into a session with her longtime collaborator Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle (Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX), and Tobias Jesso Jr. (Adele, Niall Horan). Despite their seemingly disparate musical backgrounds, the group ended up making eight of the 11 tracks on the album.

“I remember thinking it was a genius move to get that combination of people together,” Parker told Rolling Stone. However, it wasn’t easy for Lipa to bring new people into her world.

Lipa admitted, “As things get bigger, you get more scared to open up and be vulnerable and sit down in a room and just speak from the heart.”

This past November, Lipa released the first single from the project, “Houdini,” produced by Harle and Parker. Read why it’s one of our most anticipated albums of 2024.
