Dua Lipa Paired a Strong-Shouldered Statement Coat With a Blingy Bag

It's all about balance.

Mark your calendars: Dua Lipa's new album, Radical Optimism, comes out on May 3. That means that for the next week or so, we'll be getting a veritable parade of Dua Lipa outfits as she zips across the globe to promote her third studio album, including today's supersized black leather trench coat, which featured over-the-top statement-making shoulder pads. T

he superstar singer was seen in New York City today with her now-signature red hair slicked back to compliment the Matrix mood of her outerwear, which also included an ankle-skimming hem, oversized sleeves, and a big, wide belt that she left open. Making up for its exaggerated silhouette, the jacket lacked any visible buttons on the front.

Lipa paired the jacket with a comparatively delicate top-handle bag made up of tiny mirrored balls—perhaps a nod to the disco inflection of her lead singles, "Illusion," "Training Season," and "Houdini"? She finished the look with wide-leg jeans and a pair of pointy black heels, which peeked out from the hem of her denim.

Speaking about her new album's rollout, she said that she intentionally chose more upbeat songs to get fans in the mood to celebrate.

"I always go for the most upbeat ones to introduce people to the record. I can just keep on dancing and keep people dancing," she said. "We're trying to create a world in a different way, and sonically it was about experimenting. Thematically, it was always about resilience."

"A couple of years ago, a friend introduced me to the term radical optimism," she shared when she announced the album earlier this year. “It’s a concept that resonated with me, and I became more curious as I started to play with it and weave it into my life."

She continued: "It struck me—the idea of going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm. At the same time, I found myself looking through the music history of psychedelia, trip-hop, and Britpop. It has always felt so confidently optimistic to me, and that honesty and attitude is a feeling I took into my recording sessions."

Of course, there's a deeper meaning behind the dancefloor-ready bops. Speaking to Rolling Stone back in January, Lipa said that the tracks dive into heartbreak and major changes in her life.

“This record feels a bit more raw," she said. "I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad. You can’t change it. You just have to roll with the punches of whatever’s happening in your life.”
