At Dua Lipa’s tour kickoff in Miami on Wednesday night (February 9th), the artist put on a heart-pumping show that her fans are sure to be nostalgic about in the days to come.

Lipa’s show, dubbed “Future Nostalgia,” is of course based around her best-selling pop album of the same name. After years of pandemic-related delays, the British singer was finally able to bring the LP to life, playing to a sold-out crowd at FTX Arena in downtown Miami. For around 90 minutes, Lipa and her dancers delivered an energetic, dancing experience that allowed her fans to travel to a different, happier world, even if just for a little while.

As the arena turned dark, signaling the start of the show, an intro video played, introducing all of Lipa’s backup dancers before the woman of the hour strutted out on stage in a lime green jumpsuit for “Physical,” before a seamless transition into her breakout single “New Rules.” Lipa and her purple-clad dancers showed off moves reminiscent of the chart-topping music video, and the crowd eagerly counted each relationship rule with her.

Lipa has paid careful attention to her visual production, too. The next few songs followed her around the stage with dancers echoing an ‘80s style workout on lit-up roller skates, umbrellas opening and closing, flashy diamond hearts, and a cube made of twinkling lights that hovered above the arena.

The singer took fans to as many different worlds as possible; there was an “under the sea” scene, complete with a blow-up lobster for the beachy-sounding “We’re Good,” as well as an outer space set, which had planets and stars hanging from the ceiling and balloons released on the willing crowd.

In one of the more serious moments of the night, Lipa attached a train to a white jumpsuit, almost reminiscent of a wedding dress, for “Boys will be Boys.” The song highlights the discrepancy between genders and the measures women go through to feel safe compared to men, while calling for a change when teaching future generations.

The mood wasn’t serious for long, however, as the track led into a dance break. Lipa made another quick outfit change, then joined her crew onstage for fan favorites like “One Kiss” and “Electricity.”

At one point, Lipa took a moment to address the crowd, saying, “We’ve been waiting two years for this show to happen, thank you to everyone who is here tonight. I love you guys, this is incredible.”

For her final number, “Levitating,” Lipa aptly hovered above the crowd in a sparkly cut-out jumpsuit on a moving platform, then abruptly ran off stage after the number, waving goodbye to her fans. Naturally, the crowd screamed for her return; not one to disappoint, the singer came running back on stage to officially close out the show with “Future Nostalgia” and “Don’t Start Now.”

Lipa delivered exactly the kind of lively, dynamic show fans have been aching for. Indeed, last night in Miami set an impressive precedent for what’s to come.
