Dua Lipa has kicked off the rollout for her next album. The pop star has announced her new single, “Houdini,” out on November 9th via Warner. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Leading up to the announcement, Lipa left a trail of breadcrumbs on social media for fans to piece together. In a snippet posted on October 31st, the following numbers flash onscreen: 4 8 9 9 14 15 21. Matching the numbers with the corresponding letters of the English alphabet yields the result “dhiinou,” which can, in turn, be rearranged to read the name Houdini.

As it turns out, October 31st also marks the anniversary of the day that Harry Houdini died in 1926. Continuing the reference, Lipa also puts a golden key hanging on a necklace in her mouth. One of Houdini’s escape methods was to receive the handcuff key in his mouth from his wife, who passed it along as they kissed.

Lipa isn’t the first English singer to reference the famous escape artist. Kate Bush also holds a key in her mouth on the cover of her 1982 album, The Dreaming, which also features a song titled “Houdini.”

Earlier this year, Lipa essentially confirmed the rumor that she was working with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker as one of the collaborators on her upcoming psychedelia-inspired album. The project will follow Future Nostalgia, one of the best albums released in 2020.

It’s already been an impactful 2023 for Lipa, who made her acting debut in Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Barbie. She also contributed Song of the Week “Dance the Night” to the movie’s dance-inducing soundtrack.
