‘Drunk History’ Stages Mini ‘Freaks and Geeks’ Reunion With John Francis Daley and Martin Starr (Exclusive Video)

Martin Starr and John Francis Daley joined forces for a miniature “Freaks and Geeks” reunion in the latest episode of “Drunk History,” but instead of returning to high school history class, they’re staging a scene from the Civil War.

In Tuesday’s episode of “Drunk History,” Daley and Starr act out the story of “Andrews’ Raiders,” one of the great locomotive chases in history that also served as the basis for “The General,” Buster Keaton’s silent classic. This version of the story, though, has a bit more flatulence in it.

“I want three people who know how to use a train…I’m already going to burp and s—.” Daley acts out via the narration of comedian Jon Gabrus along with host Derek Waters.

The story involves a group of Union volunteers (or “voluneers” as Gabrus puts it in his tipsy state) led by a smuggler named James J. Andrews who was ordered by a Union general to cut off back up supplies to the Confederate Army without being detected.

They hijacked a train called The General and piloted it toward Chattanooga, doing damage to telephone wires and along the way, all while being pursued first on foot and then on a series of other trains. After being captured and hung, the soldiers were among the first to be awarded the Medal of Honor by the U.S. Congress for their actions.

This episode of “Drunk History” has a lot of fun with a wacky train chase where Confederate soldiers are pumping on a train car or the raiders are doing everything they can to avoid being caught.

“They jump into their third train but their fifth mode of transportation. Pro: very fast train. Con: Facing the other way on the tracks,” Gabrus says in the clip.

Starr and Daley played freshman dorks Sam Weir and Bill Haverchuk on the 1999 cult teen comedy series. This episode is probably the closest thing you’re going to get to a proper “Freaks and Geeks” reunion, as Starr once told TheWrap that there was “definitely no way in hell” it would ever to happen.

“I don’t think you’d be happy! I’m going to try and talk you out of it. You wouldn’t enjoy it if it happened,” Starr said on one of TheWrap’s Emmys panels in May 2018. “Just imagine, we’re a bunch of ugly old people now. We’re not the kids you look back and are like, ‘That’s just like me! I was awkward and weird in high school.’ Now we’re like s– pigs, grown a- s– pigs.”

“Drunk History” airs Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. on Comedy Central.
