Drunk History and Lin-Manuel Miranda Take on Hamilton: The Highlights
Let’s have another round tonight?
Comedy Central’s Drunk History on Tuesday asked Hamilton creator/star Lin-Manuel Miranda to relate an abbreviated version of the life of his hit musical’s central figure. In keeping with the show’s driving philosophy, the multiple-Tony winner did so while inebriated.

If you’re looking for an actual rundown of Hamilton’s life, you’re better served by going here or here. But if you just want a sense of what happened in the episode, here are the salient, less-than-sober highlights:
* Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) played founding father Alexander Hamilton in the re-enactment that accompanied Miranda’s narration. Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) played Hamilton’s friend/nemesis/eventual murderer Aaron Burr.
* “This is the stuff you can’t do in the play,” Miranda said as the re-enactment set ablaze the ship that Hamilton rode to the colonies.
* “I’m giggly, and there’s gaps in my memory already,” Miranda said, when the narrative was only up to the Battle of Yorktown.
* Tony Hale (Veep) played James Monroe, one of the men who uncovered Hamilton’s extramarital affair with Maria Reynolds. And when Hamilton decided that the best course of action would be to snuff out rumor by writing a detailed account of his sexing up the woman in question, “The whole thing reads like a Penthouse letter,” Miranda noted. “The Reynolds Pamphlet is like D–k 101.”
* Miranda offered perhaps the best drunken aside ever when, in the middle of narration, he blurted out, “Oh, Questlove’s texting me?” What followed was a FaceTime session with the Tonight Show bandleader/Hamilton original cast recording producer.
* Bull‘s Christopher Jackson, who played George Washington in Hamilton, also made a FaceTime cameo. “As long as I got a job, you got a job,” Miranda drunkenly promised his friend. A few times.
* Miranda definitely pronounced “bodice” as “bow-diss” at one point.

* Toward the end of the episode, and very close to the point that covered the duel in which Burr killed Hamilton, Miranda sat at the piano and he and host Derek Waters shout-sang a chorus of Semisonic’s “Closing Time.” “It’s like a metaphor for everything,” Miranda said.
* The episode ended with Miranda and Waters doing what you do when you’re three sheets to the wind and it’s late: eating drunk food out of an aluminum diner take-out container.
