The Drums’ new album Jonny is out today, and along with it is a music video for the song “Dying,” featuring Rico Nasty. Check it out below.
Nothing about “Dying” is expected. On paper, it’s already hard to imagine Jonny Pierce’s indie pop project collaborating with Rico, who veers more toward metal in her own alternative-rap songs. Yet, the single isn’t indie pop or rap rock; with a harp-like electronic melody and nasally, earnest vocals, “Dying” finds the artists combine hyperpop and emo to create something totally unique.
In a statement, Pierce chalked “Dying” up to an unshakeable feeling of loneliness. “For much of my life, I have felt like a ghost floating outside of my own body, outside of my own experiences, outside of my own relationships,” he said. “The song and video portray that frustrating disconnection to self, and how that disconnect plays a part in how others have sometimes seen and experienced me, leading to a feeling of loneliness without hope. If I can’t be in my body, and know myself, how can I learn to love myself? And if I can’t learn to love myself, how can I be truly known and loved by anyone else? Dying all my life… ”
For her part, Rico Nasty shared, “Working with Jonny has been a dream. He has such a vulnerable soul… the song came about pretty simply. We’ve been showing love to each other throughout the years and our schedules finally allowed us time to make something beautiful together. The song is about spending all your life dying for love.”
“Dying” follows the previous Jonny singles “Better” and “The Flowers.” Looking ahead, The Drums will celebrate their new album with a handful of performances in California and Mexico. See their full tour itinerary below.
