Driver Rescued From Mass. Floodwaters After Clinging To Tree and ‘Screaming for Dear Life’

A man who was rescued from floodwaters in Massachusetts as Winter Storm Finn moved out of the area was found clinging to a tree and screaming for help when firefighters came to help.

Crews responded to the scene on Upland Road in Norwood around 5:30 a.m. local time Wednesday after learning a vehicle was submerged in floodwaters, according to a statement from the Norwood Fire Department (NFD) shared on Facebook.

The driver was found “hanging on to a tree” when firefighters arrived at the scene, the NFD said. The man had pulled himself out of the vehicle “but was unable to swim” in the water around him.

Nancy Robles, who lives near the scene, told CBS affiliate WBZ-TV that she could hear the man yelling for help from her home. She said she was awoken by the sound of sirens.

"He was holding on to the branch," Robles told the station. "He was just hanging and screaming for dear life."

A rescue swimmer donned a survival suit and swam out to the victim, who was safely rescued, according to the NFD. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man’s car, a Toyota Corolla, was later towed from the scene, per WBZ-TV.

At least six people have died in the wake of Winter Storm Finn, which slammed into the Midwest and East Coast with heavy rain, snow and even tornadoes in southern portions of the United States. Another winter storm is on the way, as well.

Winter Storm Gerri is expected to impact Midwest states on Thursday before moving through eastern states on Friday and Saturday, according to Weather.com. The system is expected to trigger more severe weather in the south, as well as more heavy rain and snow up north.
