“Drive-Away Dolls ”filmmakers explain Miley Cyrus' cameo as a penis 'connoisseur'

The pop star appears in Tricia Cooke and Ethan Coen's lesbian road-trip comedy as a fictional version of Cynthia Plaster Caster, who created casts of famous rock stars' genitals.

Tricia Cooke and Ethan Coen assembled a starry lineup for their raunchy comedy Drive-Away Dolls. Geraldine Viswanathan and Margaret Qualley star as two lesbian friends on a road trip, and the A-list supporting cast includes Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, and Matt Damon. But one of the most delightful appearances comes later in the movie, when pop star Miley Cyrus shows up as a groovy artist with a passion for phalluses.

Cyrus appears as a fictional version of Cynthia Plaster Caster, the legendary visual artist who rose to fame for creating plaster casts of rock stars’ penises. (Some of her subjects included Jimi Hendrix, Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks, and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys.) Cyrus’ character Tiffany pops up in a trippy, psychedelic flashback, revealing that she likes to create dildos based on her former lovers’ genitals. One of her subjects is Florida Republican senator Gary Channel (played by Damon), who’s desperate to recover his own cast and make sure his penis doesn’t derail his reelection chances.

Coen and Cooke tell EW that Cyrus was always their first choice for the role, and they say the pop star jumped at the chance to play a fictional version of Cynthia Plaster Caster.

“When we asked her to do the movie and sent her the script, we didn’t realize that she is a long time — what’s the word? — connoisseur, a student, an enthusiast for penises,” Coen says with a laugh. “She only told us after the fact. She said, ‘Yeah, man, I have a whole penis room in my house. It was profiled in Town & Country.’ We didn’t know there was such a thing as a penis room.”

“It’s been a part of her stage act for a while, the giant phallus,” Coen continues. “But she’s so much fun. She’s game and up for anything. She’s just show business, in the best sense.”

“We also knew that she had an LGBT charity, and she works with unhoused youth,” Cooke adds. “So we thought, ‘Well, this might be interesting to her, this queer movie. She might be into it.’ And she is a rockstar. She kind of fits the Cynthia Plaster Caster profile of someone who’s a musician and just a lot of fun.”

Qualley and Viswanathan’s characters discover an entire briefcase filled with Tiffany’s creations, featuring several dildos of different shapes and sizes. Cooke and Coen say that filling the briefcase led to some, well, interesting meetings with the props department.

“There were a lot of prop penis meetings,” Coen explains. “Because in the movie, it’s got to look right. The penises have got to look right!”

“We had a lot of discussion with the props person about the size and color and texture and how much they would wiggle,” Cooke adds.

“Just another day at work,” Coen says with a laugh.

Drive-Away Dolls is in theaters now.
