Drew Carey says he can finally 'move on' after conviction of ex-fiancée's murderer: 'She's with me always'

Gareth Pursehouse was sentenced to life in prison late last year for the 2020 killing of Amie Harwick.

Drew Carey feels like he finally has closure following the conviction of the man who murdered his former fiancée Amie Harwick, a respected Hollywood marriage and family therapist.

Harwick's ex-boyfriend Gareth Pursehouse, whom she filed two restraining orders against before her death, was found guilty of one count of murder and first-degree residential burglary in September 2023 after he attacked Harwick and threw her over her balcony at her Hollywood Hills apartment in February 2020. He was later sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“I can barely remember the guy's name — that's how much I've put him out of my life," Carey told PEOPLE for this week's issue. "But ever since the final sentencing, it feels like we've all let out a breath and are able to finally move on. The whole process is over now, and there's nothing else to be done and nothing else to worry about… Just speaking just for myself, it's been quite a load off.”

Pictures of Harwick remain in Carey's home and his The Price Is Right dressing room, which he passes every day on his way out the door and onto set as the game show's host.

“She’s with me always,” Carey said. "A lot of times I’ll feel like I’ll be thinking things through, and it’s almost like I can hear her voice saying, ‘Well, really, it’s because of this and that.’ It’s really nice, honestly.”

Carey met Harwick in 2017, and the two were engaged by the following year. (Harwick also appeared on a 2018 Valentine's Day edition of The Price Is Right.) They split and called off the engagement in late 2018.

In the wake of Harwick's sudden death, Carey halted production on The Price Is Right to mourn her, remembering his former partner and their relationship in a statement shared with EW.

"Amie and I had a love that people are lucky to have once in a lifetime," Carey said then. "She was a positive force in the world, a tireless and unapologetic champion for women, and passionate about her work as a therapist. I am overcome with grief. I would like to thank you in advance for giving myself and everyone who loved Amie privacy while we try to work through this tragic situation."
