PEOPLE's 50th Anniversary Cake

PEOPLE Magazine’s milestone 50th anniversary calls for a very special cake — and who better to make it than the Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro, and his team of designers.

“You got to call me for the 50th anniversary cake. We’ll make you guys a great cake,” the cake expert told PEOPLE during an interview in November. And that’s exactly what the team at Carlo’s Bakery did.

On Thursday, April 11, Drew Barrymore, who’s one of PEOPLE’s 50th Anniversary cover stars, unveiled the celebratory cake on her show alongside PEOPLE Editor-in-Chief Wendy Naugle.

The nearly 3-foot tall cake was made with Carlo’s Bakery’s signature black and white cake (chocolate and vanilla layers sandwiched with fudge frosting.)

PEOPLE’s cover, which featured 11 different celebrities — from Jennifer Aniston to Serena Williams — was brought to life as the ultimate garden party. Naturally, the anniversary cake adhered to the same theme with several nods to PEOPLE’s past and present sprinkled on the dessert.

Most notably, a caricature of Barrymore sits atop the “50th PEOPLE” logo. The lifelike figurine is dressed in a blue power suit just like the set the actress wore on the milestone cover issue.

Along with beautiful spring flowers and mossy decorations, the cake gives a special nod to PEOPLE’s extensive royal coverage: one of the Queen’s corgis stands at the foot of the cake. Of course, the pup is wearing a regal crown.

One of the confection’s most special touches is a string of pearls tangled around the magazine’s logo. The jewelry piece is an homage to PEOPLE’s first-ever issue in 1974, which featured Mia Farrow with delicate pearls in her mouth. (For PEOPLE’S 40th anniversary, Taylor Swift recreated Farrow’s iconic inaugural cover and Great Gatsby look by wearing the same white outfit, posing with the necklace.)

It’s only fitting that the anniversary cake was revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show. The E.T. star has been featured on PEOPLE covers a whopping 15 times.

“I have been a lifelong lover of this magazine,” the 49-year-old said in this week’s issue of PEOPLE. “It's more than a magazine to me. It's been like a safe place, a real marker of what the heck is happening in my life.”

The star, who’s been working in Hollywood since she was 11 years old, said that her features in the magazine have covered every aspect of her life.

“I've done covers of PEOPLE that have shown that I'm flawed and figuring it out, that I'm trying to get my life back on track, that I've become a mom, that I've gotten married, that I'm doing something right at work or starting a new endeavor in this talk show. At every interval that's been symbolic in my life, there is a PEOPLE Magazine cover to show for it,” she said.
