What if Drew Barrymore's iconic Scream character had just left her killer on "read"?

In a funny new sketch for her new daytime series, The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress, 45, steps back into the horror movie role that shocked viewers back in 1996. Spoiler alert, her Casey Becker character doesn't survive past the opening scene — a shock to moviegoers at the time since Barrymore was heavily included in the film's marketing.

For the 2020 30-second reimagining, Barrymore dons the blonde bob hairdo and white sweater similar to in the movie, 24 years later, to see how she could have just not answered the Ghostface killer's phone call. Forget '90s landlines, she now has a smartphone in the modern take.

Barrymore checks her phone while walking down the street in the sketch, as her would-be murderer texts her: "Casey, come on pick up!" and "I come in peace lol :) :) :)." Her character simply ignores the messages and continues on her day.

"Stop GHOSTING me!!!" Ghostface then texts, as Barrymore appears unbothered.

During an appearance on First We Feast’s Hot Ones series in August, Barrymore talked about the history behind some of her biggest roles, including her iconic but short-lived one in the 1996 horror hit. When host Sean Evans asked her if she chose to take on the film's smaller role instead of its lead part, Barrymore nodded.

"In the horror film genre, my biggest pet peeve was that I always knew the main character was going to be slugging through at the end, but was going to creak by and make it. What I wanted to do is to take that comfort zone away," she explained.

Instead of playing the film's lead of Sydney Prescott, Barrymore insisted to Scream director, the late Wes Craven, that she play the role of Casey, who gets killed off within the first 15 minutes. "I asked if I could be Casey Becker so that we would establish that rule does not apply in this film,” she recalled.

Scream was a box office success when it debuted in theaters, and the franchise has gone on to produce three other films as well as a television series based on the mythos of the Scream universe. A fifth movie is in the works, as well, with stars Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell all returning.

Barrymore explained her decision to play the role of Casey in more detail back in 2011 to Entertainment Weekly, when she revealed that she was only on the film's set for five days.

"I just read the script one night at my house and I just said, 'Oh my God, there hasn’t been anything like this for so long,'" she said at the time. "I loved that it actually got tongue-in-cheeky but it was still scary and it was this great game that sort of described genres and revived them at the same time and redefined them all in one script. I went bananas."

Barrymore will host an all-new "Drew's Movie Nite" on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET to rewatch Scream with fans and special guests on CBS Television Network and CBS All Access. Follow along on her Twitter accounts and by using the hashtag #DrewsMovieNite.
