Please tell your group chats and NBA fans that Draymond Green has done it again. The controversial Golden State Warriors forward got into another scuffle that led to the Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins falling to the floor.

So, how did we get here again? Green contested Grizzlies forward Santi Aldama as he made a layup during the Wednesday matchup between the Warriors and Grizzlies (March 20). Aldama didn’t seem happy with Green’s contact and bumped into him, which led Green to retaliate. The four-time NBA Champion seemingly didn’t want the situation to escalate given his recent suspensions, so after some brief shoving he gripped the chest area of Aldama’s jersey and told him “Don’t do that” before pushing him and running back up the court.

The Grizzlies’ head coach Taylor Jenkins spoke to the referees after the scuffle, seemingly trying to encourage them to punish Green for the physicality. As Draymond stood by to listen in on the conversation, Grizzlies star Desmond Bane came over to try and move him out of the way. Green, in self-defense, pushed Bane’s hands off of him; the heightened physicality led to both the Warriors and Grizzlies emptying their benches. Amid the growing fray, Green was pushed into Jenkins, causing him to fall to the floor.

Draymond Green and Desmond Bane were both handed technical fouls as a result of their scuffle. The Golden State Warriors used this tense interaction as fuel to go on a 17-0 run and win the game 137-116.

This situation is significant for two reasons. One, it is another case of Green being physically involved with his opponents after serving a suspension for choking Rudy Gobert earlier in the season, and then being suspended again and forced to attend counseling after striking Jusuf Nurkic in the face.

Additionally, there has been tension between the Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies for a few seasons now. Ja Morant, the star guard for the Grizzlies, declared that they had no competition in the Western Conference in December 2022. Draymond addressed these comments on his eponymous podcast in January 2023, claiming that while Ja is extremely talented, the Grizzlies team was not all that they were cracked up to be.

Draymond Green would know that best, as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2022 playoffs en route to winning the NBA Finals for the fourth time in seven years. Ever since Ja Morant’s confident comment, the Grizzlies went on to win the 2nd seed in the Western Conference before losing in the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs to the 7th seeded Los Angeles Lakers.

They have already been eliminated from playoff contention in 2024, though their season got off to a rough start due to Ja Morant’s 25-game suspension and subsequent season-ending injury along with losing other players to injury.

Green may not have been entirely in wrong in Wednesday’s scenario, but the public jaw-jacking between the teams and his string of physical incidents make this a bad look for him as he tries to repair his image.
