Dr. Seuss' personal hat collection is coming to a city near you
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, the late author’s hats are going on display for the very first time.
As part of the year-long Hats Off to Dr. Seuss campaign, which pays tribute to Seuss’ literary career, philanthropic work, and artistic hobbies, Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises have collaborated on The Dr. Seuss Traveling Hat Tour.
The show, which debuted at the New York Public Library on Monday, includes about a dozen chapeaus — including a jaunty cap similar to the one seen on Bartholomew Cubbins, and a red-and-white stovepipe that’s reminiscent of the signature headwear worn by The Cat in the Hat — from Seuss’ personal collection.
Whimsical toppers appeared in many of Seuss’ most well-known children’s books, but they were also a big part of his personal traditions. Guests were often required to wear hats while visiting his home in La Jolla, California.
The exhibit, which also includes hat-themed artwork painted by Seuss, will tour the country over the next ten months, making stops in cities like San Francisco, Detroit and Chicago.
