Dr. Phil’s Two Rules When It Comes To Children

Dr. Phil says he has two important rules when it comes to children, especially if they're caught in the middle of a troubled relationship.

“I have two rules that I really adhere to with children,” Dr. Phil says. “One is you never involve them in adult issues. And two, you never burden them with things over which they have no control.”

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Huge family drama?

Dr. Phil’s guests, Brandi and Max, are at a crossroads in their marriage after Max has admitted that he has been unfaithful since he and Brandi met. The couple says they recently shared with Brandi’s teen daughters that Max had cheated before their marriage – something Dr. Phil strongly advises against.

“It’s a marital issue between the two of you,” Dr. Phil tells the couple. “The impact it has on the family is handled at a different level.”

“I still don’t understand what I should have done,” Brandi says, noting that she was trying to be honest with her girls who she says were noticing the strain in the relationship.

“What you don’t do is extrude all of this in front of these children and drag [Max] to the alter for slaughter in front of the daughters,” Dr. Phil says.
