Faren says she spends most of her time trying to control her 7-year-old son, Michael, who has tantrums in which he screams, kicks, and hits people, including Faren, her boyfriend Ricky, pets, other children in the home, and himself. “I don’t really like spanking the kids because it makes me feel bad to do it,” she says. Faren admits she relies on her boyfriend Ricky, who has lived with her for about eight months, to help her control her son. Ricky acknowledges disciplining the child but claims he doesn’t “directly influence” the way Michael behaves. Dr. Phil reviews a series of clips recorded by Faren that illustrate Michael’s behaviors at home. “What I always look for is for the parent to be the calm in the eye of the storm,” he says. Watch the video above to hear his observations on Faren and Ricky’s interactions with Michael. This episode of Dr. Phil, “Threatened By My Second Grader,” airs Thursday.
