Dr. Oz Mourns the Death of His Father and Fellow Physician: 'Dad Changed Everyone Who Met Him'

Dr. Mehmet Oz is mourning the loss of his father.

The Dr. Oz Show host announced on Instagram earlier this week that his dad, Dr. Mustafa Oz, had died at age 93. In a touching tribute, the television personality shared multiple photos of his father throughout his life and remembered the positive impact that the Oz family patriarch had on both his own kin and his patients.

“My dad passed away today at the age of 93. Dad changed everyone who met him. I remember as a child running behind his fast-moving legs while he made hospital rounds. Even as he aged and his legs no longer raced along, his mind never slowed down,” wrote Dr. Oz, 58.

“I fell in love with medicine after witnessing my dad do sometimes painful procedures on desperately sick patients who subsequently thanked him for saving their lives,” he continued the post.

Dr. Oz concluded, “The opportunity to help is a powerful aphrodisiac and the responsibility to act should not be squandered, so he insisted that he and his children were ‘The Best,’ a contagious admonition. ??”

One day later, Dr. Oz shared another smiling photo of the late physician and bid his father farewell.

“Dad, we are all the shoulder of the serpentine obstacle course that you weathered for over 93 years so you take the straight and wide boulevard to heaven that you earned for every minute of your hard-fought life,” he captioned the smiling shot of his dad.

“Enjoy the sweet journey while we earn your respect by fighting the battles that mattered to you,” he continued.

Dr. Oz’s daughter and The Chew alum Daphne Oz also mourned her grandfather’s death on social media.

Alongside a black-and-white throwback photo — captured in 1960 in Delaware — of her grandparents with her father as a baby, Daphne, 32, praised her grandfather as “a brilliant surgeon, filled with the most relentless work ethic and pursuit of perfection.”

“He loved to tell the story of when he came to America after completing medical school as a lifelong scholarship student in Turkey and his mother told the pilot to ‘fly slow and low to the ground!’ ” wrote Daphne. “He was funny, fearless, tough, and the best bazaar bargainer. We will miss you, Buyuk Baba. ??”

After receiving an outpour of love and support from fans, Daphne thanked her followers on Instagram for their “kindness and condolences” alongside a black-and-white photo of her own family.

“My grandfather lived a long and full life, and seeing his family grow and thrive made him the happiest,” wrote the mother of three, who shares kids Domenica Celine, 14 months, Jovan Jr., 3, and Philomena Bijou, 4, with husband John Jovanovic.

“We are so lucky to have enjoyed all these years together,” she said of her grandfather, “and I’m looking forward to keeping his memory alive for our children.”

For MINI magazine‘s summer 2018 cover story, the cookbook author posed with her children and revealed that she is “for sure” open to having more kids — and giving her father more grandchildren.

“I love it,” Daphne said of motherhood. “I think that there’s a part of me that worries that I will just miss any version [of my children]. These kids are all so different. They come out with these little personalities totally intact, and there are all these iterations of what you can create, so I want to see some more versions.”

Still, she’s “not in a rush,” she insisted. “I want to enjoy it. I want my kids to enjoy their little moment in the sun too.”
