Downtown Athens Fuzzy's Taco Shop closes after 10 years in landmark location
The bright red Fuzzy's Taco Shop sign at the corner of Lumpkin and Washington streets has been taken down. After ten years in business downtown, the Tex-Mex eatery permanently closed last month.
Though no official statement was posted on the business's social media pages, the official Fuzzy's Taco Shop website no longer lists the Athens location, and the phone number is not in service. Messages sent from the Banner-Herald to the Fuzzy's corporate office were not immediately returned.
The restaurant's contact info on Google lists it as "permanently closed."

Kristi Parks, general manager of the Athens Fuzzy's location, wrote a post in the Athens Service Industry (Food and Beverage) Facebook group on Dec. 15, 2021 that confirmed the closure. In the post, Parks wrote that Fuzzy's was looking to get rid of chairs, bar stools and other equipment from the restaurant.
In 2011, Fuzzy's Taco Shop was announced as one of the first retail spaces to open, along with Waffle House and the since-closed Mama Goldberg's Deli and Yoforia in the structure that housed the new Washington Street parking deck.
Fuzzy's closed its Baton Rouge, La. location near Louisiana State University last summer after launching a counter service-only franchise location in Minneapolis, Minn. called Fuzzy's Taco Shop Taqueria, which was designed to take up less physical space by focusing on carry-out and delivery.
