‘Downton Abbey’ Alum Dan Stevens to Return to Broadway in Martin McDonagh’s ‘Hangmen’

Dan Stevens, the star of “Downton Abbey” and “Legion,” will return to Broadway this spring in Martin McDonagh’s award-winning comedic thriller “Hangmen,” producers announced Wednesday.

The cast will also include Mark Addy (“Game of Thrones”), Tracie Bennett (“End of the Rainbow”), Ewen Bremner (“Trainspotting”), Owen Campbell (“Indian Summer”), Gaby French (“Military Wives”), John Hodgkinson, Richard Hollis and John Horton.

The show, which won the 2016 Olivier Award for best new play in London, will begin previews at Broadway’s Golden Theatre on Feb. 28 and officially open on March 19.

Stevens, who made his Broadway debut in a 2012 revival of “The Heiress” opposite Jessica Chastain, will play Mooney, a well-dressed stranger who turns up in a quiet neighborhood pub in northern England in 1965 — and wreaks all sorts of havoc for the locals. Johnny Flynn originated the role in London as well as in a 2018 production at Off Broadway’s Atlantic Theater Company.

Addy plays Harry, the proprietor of the pub and a local celebrity as Britain’s second most famous executioner — not adjusting to the news that the country has abolished capital punishment by hanging. As you might expect from the writer-director of “In Bruges” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” the play features plenty of dark humor and narrative twists.

Matthew Dunster will direct the production, which features scenic and costume design by Olivier Award-winner Anna Fleischle, lighting design by Joshua Carr and sound design by Olivier Award winner Ian Dickinson.

The show is produced by Robert Fox, Jean Doumanian and Elizabeth I. McCann.

I am of course referring to the investigation into serious allegations of illegal conduct by the president of the United States — that the president has engaged in a persistent pattern and practice of obstruction of justice. The allegations are grave, the investigation is legitimate, and ascertaining the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the unqualified, unevasive truth is absolutely critical.” - Mitch McConnell February 12, 1998.
