Double-Cs Unite for Francis Ford Coppola-Chanel Dinner at the Cannes Film Festival

CANNES — The double-Cs go deep in the Chanel-Coppola relationship. Not only is Sofia a long-standing ambassador, but the brand hosted the official dinner and after party of her father Francis Ford Coppola’s world premiere of “Megalopolis” at the Cannes Film Festival.
After the screening and a 10-minute standing ovation, the cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf and Chloe Fineman headed to dinner at La Petite Maison at the new Palm Beach luxury entertainment complex.

It was a family affair with son Roman Coppola, sister Talia Shire and granddaughter Romy Mars joining the family patriarch. The Coppolas held court at a corner table, feasting on heaps of gnocchi and truffle pasta served family-style, while greeting congratulatory guests.
Speaking after the screening, the veteran director praised his family as well as his cast. “All of these wonderful actors, they were all my family,” Coppola said. “We’re all one family, you’re all my cousins. Because we are one, we are the human family and as you see at the end [of the film,] that’s who we should pledge our allegiance to — our entire family, and to this beautiful home Earth that we have.”
He gamely posed for pics with the actors, including John Voight, then stepped onto the very breezy balcony with Aubrey Plaza and Shia LaBeouf, planting a gentlemanly kiss on Plaza’s hand then making bunny ears behind LaBeouf while the actor took selfies.
Cannes jury president Greta Gerwig hit the restaurant in a Chanel tweed dress with sequin pocket detailing, accompanied by stylist Karla Welch. Plaza’s stylist Jessica Paster was also on hand, and the actress changed into a miniskirt suit following her slinky white Loewe gown on the red carpet.
The evening was a major star turn for Emmanuel, who also made a quick change from her form-fitting Chanel gown into a skirt suit with a crop top. She was party ready.
“I really am. These shoes have been chosen because they’re very comfortable and I can move. I think I can throw some shapes in this,” she said of hitting the dance floor.
Fineman also made a costume change from her red Celine gown into a low-cut black Chanel dress. “Now that is a party dress!” exclaimed Emmanuel upon seeing her in the sequined number.
Fineman was still coming down from the surreal experience of seeing herself on the big screen of the Palais des Festivals.
“I was like, I cannot believe this is happening. I also was, like, surprised I was in the movie,” the “Saturday Night Live” star joked.
She plays part of a chorus of sorts, which required a lot of improv during big scenes. “I have been in shock the whole time, like, I cannot believe this. It is so surreal. It was just like ‘pinch me,’” said the self-confessed theater kid.
While Fineman has attended the Met Gala and braved that arrivals line, she said the Cannes red carpet was “insane.”
“The French have a way of screaming that is very different than the U.S.” she said. “This was on a totally ‘nother level.”
Fineman also sang the praises of costume designer Milena Canonero, relaying a story of how there was a brown dress that she lobbied for, but in the end it didn’t work on film. “[That dress] was not my color. It was too sweaty and it didn’t make sense — and she was right. She knew. She’s an absolute genius.”
Fineman joked she might as well make it an all-nighter. “I have to leave here at 3:50 a.m. to go to the airport and get back to work.”
Vicky Krieps planned an early evening, but when the house band jumped up on the tables to play “Bamboléo” and everyone stood up to sing, the “Phantom Thread” actress decided to make it a late night as well — despite being a member of the Un Certain Regard jury slated to watch three films the following day. “It felt joyous,” she said of the musical ambiance.
The party also saw industry power players including producers Charles Finch, Melita Toscan du Plantier and Rosalie Varda, and actors including Julie Gayet and Mike Faist among the guests.
“The support is a way for Chanel to celebrate the work of one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation, as well as the house’s long-standing ties to the Coppola family,” the brand said in a statement.
