'You Don't Care if Women Die': Protesters Chant Outside Supreme Court After Leaked Abortion Draft

Protesters gathered outside the US Supreme Court on Monday, May 2, following a leaked initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito in February.

The draft opinion, circulated inside the Supreme Court and obtained by Politico, said the court had voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which has guaranteed federal abortion protections since 1973.

According to the report by Politico, the ruling would bring an end to the “guarantee of federal constitutional protection of abortion rights and allow each state to decide whether to restrict or ban abortion.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that, if the report was accurate, “the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans.”

Planned Parenthood said: “This is a draft opinion. It’s outrageous, it’s unprecedented, but it is not final.”

According to the New York Times, when asked for reaction to the leak of a draft opinion, a Supreme Court spokeswoman said: “The Court has no comment.”
