Donald Trump Wins 2016 Presidential Election

At around 11:37 p.m. PST on Nov. 8, 2016, Donald J. Trump was declared the winner of the 45th presidential election, surpassing the necessary 270 electoral votes with his victory in Wisconsin.

Trump's win against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was hard-fought, and while many pollsters rightfully predicted the race would be tight, most statistical analysis sites and news publications wrongly predicted Clinton would emerge the victor. Ultimately, Trump was able to pull ahead of his opponent by winning multiple states he was projected to lose, and his wins in important swing states like Florida and Ohio quickly turned the needle in his favor.

The Republican candidate's first victory of the evening came from Kentucky, followed by early victories in Indiana, West Virginia, and Oklahoma. Despite a close race in important battleground states like Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, Trump ultimately managed to cinch the majority of the swing states, sometimes by only a few thousand votes. At the time of this article, Trump was ahead in the popular vote by slightly over 1 million votes, but results are still pending in Alaska, Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, and New Hampshire.

Trump first announced he would be running for president in front of an audience of approximately 1,000 people at Trump Tower on June 16, 2015. He went on to defeat multiple opponents, securing his party's nomination at the Republican National Convention in July. On July 15, 2016, he announced via Twitter his choice of vice presidential running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
