Donald Trump mocks 'ridiculous' Green New Deal on 'Hannity'

On Hannity Wednesday night, President Donald Trump changed his tune about the Green New Deal, an ambitious Democratic resolution to cut carbon emissions, increase the use of renewable energy and create jobs. In the past, Trump has openly mocked the resolution. But when asked about it, Trump explained that he doesn’t want to do that anymore — but only so his political opponents keep pushing it, to his favor.

He explained his reasoning to Hannity, botching the plan’s name in the process.

“Well, I don’t want to talk badly about the New Green Deal, Sean,” Trump said, “because, frankly, I’m afraid they’ll stop using it. Because I really do want to campaign against it.”

And though Trump told Hannity he didn’t want to say anything bad about the Green New Deal, that didn’t stop him from saying something bad about it.

“It’ll cost $100 trillion, nobody knows what that means,” Trump claimed. “That means it’s more money than you have in the world, and it’ll be catastrophic.”

It should be noted that what the Green New Deal would actually cost is up for debate. Even a right-wing think tank came up with a number smaller than Trump’s.

Nearly every 2020 democratic presidential candidate has publicly supported the Green New Deal, which is exactly what Trump says he wants. But he still can’t seem to stop taking swipes at it even in the same breath as saying he doesn’t want to.

“The New Green Deal is ridiculous,” Trump said, “but I don’t want to speak badly because I want them to keep going forward with it. I really look forward to campaigning.”

Hannity airs weeknights at 9 p.m. on Fox News.
