Donald Trump Reveals Medical Results on ‘Dr. Oz’
Donald Trump shared the results of a medical examination with Dr. Mehmet Oz during the taping of an episode of “The Dr. Oz Show” on Wednesday, the latest twist in the presidential campaign and its focus on the candidates’ health.
But it was unclear just how much medical information would be revealed, and the extent to which Trump would talk about his medical history. Some news outlets reported that Trump handed Oz a one-page summary of his exam, and that Oz told Trump he was slightly overweight at 267 pounds.
Trump, 70, was examined last week by his doctor, Dr. Harold Bornstein of Lennox Hill Hospital, who has been his longtime personal physician.
The show is expected to release clips of the interview later on Wednesday.
According to a release from the show, Oz “took Trump through a full review of systems,” including his nervous system, neck and back, hormone levels, cardiovascular health, respiratory health, gastrointestinal health, bladder or prostate health, dermatological health, history of cancer, and family medical history. The show said that all physicians do that when seeing patients for the first time.
There was some confusion as to just what Trump would reveal about his medical exam on the show. His campaign reportedly indicated that the results would be revealed, then on Wednesday morning indicated they would not. In any case, it is likely that there will be extensive scrutiny of the extent of the disclosure and when the media records will be released publicly.
Hillary Clinton’s campaign has said that they would release medical information soon, after she was diagnosed last week with pneumonia. She is expected to return to the campaign trail on Thursday.
The “Dr. Oz” show with Trump will air on Thursday.
Trump’s appearance on Oz is unusual in that campaigns have traditionally revealed medical information in a press release or press conference. But Trump, joined by his daughter Ivanka on the program, is trying to boost his support among women, who make up a majority of Oz’s audience.
Oz was once dubbed “America’s doctor” by Oprah Winfrey, who helped boost his fame, but he has been the source of controversy in recent years. At a Senate hearing in 2014, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) slammed him for promoting dietary supplements as “miracle” products for weight loss.
Update: “The Dr. Oz Show” released a video clip of the show, in which Trump hands Oz two letters. “One is the report and the other is from Lenox Hill Hospital,” Trump says. So its unclear if these are the actual medical evaluation or letters based on the evaluation.
