Donald Trump Reignites Feud With NY Times Over Sit-Down; Now Back On

Last night it was the “crooked media” that Donald Trump was attacking online, and this morning it’s his old nemesis the “failing” New York Times over a meeting the President-elect was supposed to have with the Grey Lady that he abruptly cancelled via a series of early-morning tweets.

This morning, after Trump went off the leash on the NYT, the sit-down is back on — for now. And unlike yesterday’s summit with news executives and on-air talent from CNN, Fox News Channel, ABC News, CBS News and NBC News, it will be partially on-the-record.

And then, peace in our time.

This latest drama in Trump’s war on the paper looks to have all happened without the knowledge of the NYT. The publication released a statement of clarification at one point Tuesday when it looked like Trump was pulling the plug.

“We were unaware that the meeting was canceled until we saw the president-elect’s tweet this morning,” said NYT SVP Communications Eileen Murphy. “We did not change the ground rules at all and made no attempt to, she added in the statement “They tried to yesterday — asking for only a private meeting and no on-the-record segment, which we refused to agree to. In the end, we concluded with them that we would go back to the original plan of a small off-the-record session and a larger on-the-record session with reporters and columnists.”

If that actually ends up being what goes down when Team Trump and Team NYT meet in just over an hour is anyone’s guess — as is how it will be spun by various parties afterwards.

With all the pundit pondering over whether angry Trump or humble Trump will be the dominate personality of the ex-Apprentice host when he actually takes office, these media spats leave the impression that it looks like business will be conducted like the NBC reality show: if the boss doesn’t like you, you’re fired, even if you don’t actually work for him.
