Donald Trump Refuses to Pay for Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's Security — Not That They're Asking

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly cut their stay in Canada short and relocated to Los Angeles, California to ride out this period of global uncertainty. While we’re happy to have Meghan back stateside with her husband and baby Archie, President Donald Trump didn’t quite share in our enthusiasm. Trump tweeted Sunday that the Sussex duo would have to pay for security upon their return to the US — but, per their spokesperson, Meghan and Harry won’t be paying Trump for security any time soon.

A spokesperson for Meghan and Harry gave a statement hours after the President’s tweet. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have no plans to ask the U.S. government for security resources Privately funded security arrangements have been made.”

While staying in Canada, Harry and Meghan had been granted security detail through the Canadian government, due to their status as Internationally Protected Persons. But upon their decision to step back from the royal family, the government announced they would cease their security offering in late February.

Now, Trump has made it clear that the Sussex couple should not expect government assistance on US soil — without a fee. “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom,” he tweeted. “It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”

Not the warmest welcome, but clearly, Harry and Meghan haven’t struggled to find their own funding for security. Given Trump’s track record with Harry and Meghan, such as calling Meghan “nasty” in an interview after learning she didn’t vote for him, it’s perhaps unsurprising that he’s not eager to see the couple back. But as the COVID-19 crisis continues, we’ll all have to choose our battles — and we hope this isn’t an indication of more drama to come.
