Donald Trump Pushes Back Against White Supremacist Controversy

On Today, Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer spoke with Donald Trump as he addressed the controversy surrounding a recent interview he did with CNN in which the Republican presidential candidate refused to disavow former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke. Duke recently made headlines by saying that voting against Trump was “treason to your heritage,” referring to his white supremacist agenda. During a CNN interview, Trump was vague as to whether he denounced Duke’s endorsement. “I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t know David Duke,” Trump told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

Trump backtracked while speaking with Today. “I’m sitting in a house in Florida with a very bad earpiece that they gave me. And you can hardly hear what he was saying,” explained Trump. “But what I heard was various groups. And I don’t mind disavowing anybody. I disavowed David Duke, and disavowed him the day before at a major news conference.” Additionally, Trump was rumored to have removed himself from the 2000 presidential race as the Reform Party candidate due to Duke’s involvement with the party. Ultimately, Trump reiterated that his answer to the question was not one exclusively focused on Duke.
